Financial Education at Schools

Financial Education, based on the Guidelines for Financial Education at Schools Document (ENEF Director Plan, 2010), is important because it prepares future generations for developing competences and skills needed to handle financial decisions they will take throughout their lives.

Financial Education is not a set of calculation tools. It is a reading of reality, of life planning, of prevention and of individual and collective achievement. Thus, it makes perfect sense to be implemented from the outset of school life. After all, this is the space where we take our first steps for constructing our life project.

School is an environment where students learn not only cognitive knowledge, but also what provides then with the capacity to administer their lives in society, where they can learn to make choices and dream, but also to discover ways to achieve these paths. Financial Education is understood as a cross-sectional theme that relates with several subjects in High and Elementary School Education and, as it is developed in the classroom, it enables the student to understand that his dreams can become reality.

The Financial Education Program at Schools, comprised of two projects – High and Elementary School – has a pedagogical project and a set of books by level of education that offer the student and teacher educational activities that help insert the theme in school life.

The pedagogical model and the content were conceived based on the “Orientação para Educação Financeira nas Escolas” (Guidelines for Financial Education at Schools)” document, elaborated with the participation of the Ministry of Education (MEC), the National Union of Municipal Education Managers (UNDIME), the National Council of Secretaries of Education (CONSED) and several other educational and financial institutions over a one year period, coordinated by the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM).

This document establishes and proposes the means of aligning Financial Education and its formal content to the Basic Education curriculum, based on the Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional (Law of Guidelines and Bases for National Education) and its standards. The proposal is to offer the student information and instructions that favor the construction of consistent financial thought and the development of autonomous and healthy behavior.

The pedagogical model as well as the financial content enables the student to position himself as the leading player in the story of his life, giving him conditions to plan and make the future he wants for himself to become reality, in connection with the family and social group to which he belongs.
